Technical assessment: Humidity, Salts and Materials; EU research useful for military heritage?
In this contribution some of the maintenance problems of fortresses belonging to the NHW will be discussed, together with the results of recent EU projects in the field of technical assessment, moisture, salts and materials. Further, possibilities to use and apply results and deliverables in the case of the fortresses will be discussed.

Understanding and Conservation of Modern Military Sites
The central government estate in England includes historic fortresses and other former military buildings that now accommodate different uses, as well as old military buildings which continue in use for their original purpose. Alan Johnson will outline the advice to this "modern" military heritage (i.e. of the last 200 years) granted by the small team of architects and historians that is Government Historic Estates Unit of English Heritage.

Redevelopment and restoration of Fort 4 as a 'Cultural Barracks in the green heart of Mortsel'
Fort 4 forms the geographical centre point of Mortsel. In the past 10 years the local authorities invested a lot in the opening for the public of Fort 4, that was mainly conceived to keep people out… Two restoration projects were carried out to make the Fort more attractive as a space for culture in the green heart of the town. With his team in the Technical Services of the city of Mortsel, architect-town planner Nest Lernout prepared and worked out the acquisition, redevelopment and restoration of Fort 4 as a 'Cultural Barracks in the green heart of Mortsel'.

11.30 Collin Bootsveld, consultant sustainable innovations in energy and climate installations
Humidity and Climate Control for new functions
The presentation will focus on choosing installation solutions to achieve a warm and dry indoor climate, while preventing overheating in summer. Energy efficient solutions are well possible by using the specific characteristics of fortresses: thick walls and existing ventilation shafts. It will be illustrated how non-technical considerations often play a  prominent role in the choices that are made in this part of a transformation process.
